Today’s my birthday 🎉And yes, that’s a childhood photo of me 🙂

Every year, my parents stood me in front of the same bush in our garden and snapped a picture. Out of all of them, I only have one left. The rest have been lost over the years—through house moves and divorce.

I keep that single photograph on my desk. Not because I enjoy looking at myself as a slightly awkward kid in 80s clothes—but because it tells me something far more important.

It reminds me that my birthdays mattered. That my milestones were celebrated. That I belonged.

And that’s the heart of family photography.

At a conference years ago, a lecturer asked: “Why do people invest in family photos?”The usual answers came up—legacy, gifts for grandparents, memories to treasure. But his response was simple and powerful:

“When kids see their photos on the wall, it makes them feel as though they belong.”

A framed picture is such a small thing. Yet it’s a daily reminder to your child: You matter. You belong.

That’s what I carry into every family shoot here in Hampshire. It’s not just about nice photos in a pretty setting—it’s about telling your family’s story in a way that your children will carry with them, long after the day is over.

How to Choose a Family Photographer You Connect With

If you’re thinking about booking a family photographer in Hampshire, Southsea, or Portsmouth, here are a few things worth considering:

1. Look Beyond the Portfolio

Beautiful photos are important, but also ask: do these images feel authentic? Can you imagine your own family in them? The best photographers capture real connections, not just staged smiles.

2. Notice the Way They Talk About Families

Do they talk about shoots as checklists of poses—or as experiences? A photographer who values storytelling and belonging will help everyone relax and bring out genuine emotion.

3. Consider Their Approach With Children

Family photography isn’t just about clicking the shutter—it’s about creating an environment where kids feel comfortable and seen. A photographer who can turn nerves into laughter will capture the truest moments.

4. Choose Someone Who Listens

Every family is different. The right photographer will take the time to understand what matters most to you—whether that’s capturing milestones, creating heirlooms, or just freezing a moment in your busy, everyday life.

5. Find a Connection

Ultimately, choose a photographer you feel comfortable with. You’ll see it in the photos: when your family feels at ease, the images reflect warmth, joy, and belonging.

Family Photography in Hampshire, Southsea, and Portsmouth

This part of Hampshire is full of inspiring locations for family photography:

  • Southsea seafront with its colourful beach huts and pebbled shoreline

  • The historic cobbled streets of Old Portsmouth

  • The elegance of Stansted House

  • Sandy beaches and wide skies on Hayling Island

  • Woodland walks and green spaces around Denmead

  • The charm of Petersfield and Alton

  • The history and architecture of Winchester

And of course, some of the most meaningful family photos are taken closer to home. A session in your own house or garden can feel relaxed, familiar, and personal. With professional equipment, I can create studio-style portraits in your home—perfect for families who prefer a cosy, natural setting.

More Than Just Photos

Whether it’s a shoot in Southsea, Portsmouth, or across Hampshire, the location sets the scene—but it’s the connection between your family that makes the images timeless.

Because years from now, when your children look at those photos on the wall, they won’t just remember the day. They’ll feel it.

📸 That they mattered.📸 That they were celebrated.📸 That they belonged.

If you’d like to capture your family story—whether in Southsea, Portsmouth, Stansted House, Hayling Island, Denmead, Petersfield, Alton, Winchester, or the comfort of your own home—I’d love to hear from you.

I’m a Hampshire family photographer specialising in natural, relaxed shoots that tell your story, whether outdoors on location or studio-style in your own home.
