The first time I heard the phrase personal branding, I winced.

At the time, I’d just finished reading The Handmaid’s Tale, a dystopian novel where women are literally branded. It left me feeling deeply uneasy about the idea of “branding” humans in any sense.

Fast forward a few years, and I can confidently say: I’m now a huge fan of personal branding.

Why the change of heart?

Because I’ve come to realise that personal branding isn’t about labels or limitations—it’s about liberation. It’s about owning your story and putting your best self forward, especially in a digital world where first impressions are often made through a screen.

And as both a photographer and an author, I’d add a small but powerful tagline:

You already have one—even if you haven’t consciously created it.

Google yourself and take a look. Do the images and results reflect who you truly are? What would a future client, employer, or collaborator think if they landed on your LinkedIn or social media profile today?

We’re often told not to judge a book by its cover. But I’ve changed my book covers twice, because I know how much weight that first glance carries.
